volunteers Support Soapstone

chapter 2 logoSoapstone has just received a $20,000 challenge grant from the Denison Family Fund of the Oregon Community Foundation for which we are enormously grateful. The matching campaign, "Chapter Two," is underway!

Click here to download a PDF with the Chapter Two campaign details.

Soapstone is grateful for donations in any amount, at any time of year. In addition to cash we can accept appreciated stock, appreciated real estate, goods, and services. All donations to Soapstone are fully tax deductible; we are a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Donations are eligible for the Oregon Cultural Trust tax credit.

We solicit donations once a year in the fall and do not solicit any donor who has already made a donation during that year.

Click here to make a one-time or regular monthly donation through our secure site.

Checks should be made out to Soapstone, Inc. and mailed to 5252 NE 57th Avenue, Portland, OR 97218. Call the director at 503 327 1042 if you have questions about donating anything other than cash.

We’re equally grateful for volunteers (with and without special skills). If you have time to donate we would love to have you. Send us an email at brittney@soapstone.org

We gratefully acknowledge those whose generous support has made Soapstone possible.

Our heartfelt thanks to the many people who have contributed their time and services.

We thank everyone who donated furniture, tools, kitchen supplies, and expert advice and a special thank you to our major in-kind donors. Architect Michael McCulloch designed and provided plans for the first stage of construction in 1994. Architects Martha and Jim Andrews, in 1997, designed and provided plans for the second stage of construction. Remodeler Steve Slusarski donated many hours of shingling and repairs, new ladders and cordless tools. Landscape architect Jurgen Hess, along with Susan Hess, has volunteered over a hundred hours to plan and execute a restoration project using native plants around the flagstone pathways and terrace. Portland artist Georgiana Nehl did exquisite line drawings of the interior and exterior that we use on all our printed materials. Rejuvenation, Inc. donated most of the new light fixtures and hardware. Many writers including Grace Paley, Naomi Shihab Nye, Dorothy Allison, Craig Lesley, and Molly Gloss have donated their services for our Writers Read for Soapstone fundraising series. Kay Sohl of TACS donated her services in 1991 to prepare our application for 501(c)(3) status. Michael Stevens and Mark Browne donated and installed the two wood and glass doors in the discussion room. Oregon State University Press donated a full shelf of books on Northwest plants, wildlife and history. Wendy Feuer made and donated the lovely willow bench. Yvonne Garcia of Trillium Technology Solutions created a custom-designed data base and emailmerge system. Marcia Barrentine donated web design and maintenance services.

And to the hundreds of women and men and kids who have come out to Soapstone to stack wood, clear trails, build berms, wash windows, put up shelves, or help with any of the dozens of crucial projects done at work parties since 1992—you have helped create and maintain Soapstone in the most intimate and immediate way. We will always be grateful for your hard work and for the energy and spirit you left behind.

We urge you to support the businesses, organizations, and professionals who have donated prizes to our fundraising raffles.

"Being at Soapstone gave me the unified, uninterrupted time to focus the way I needed in order to make my manuscript 'Above the Clearwater: Living on Stolen Land' cohere. I went over the entire book three? four? times, each time finding relationships and threads and repetitions I had not seen before. This was invaluable. I don’t know how I would ever have achieved this kind of focus and wholeness, whole attention to such a large project, without Soapstone. There is something about that space, my little treehouse-for-writers, hummingbird looking in the circle-window at me, tree crashing in the darkness outside, and always those river voices, that let me shut out the extraneous noises that like to bounce around between my ears. Voices of doubt, worry, concern for the concerns of my family and friends and the world. In Wind, in the sleeping loft at night, I felt connected more intimately than ever to those loves, but deeper somehow than when I am more immediately involved with them and less with the writing. How to say it? Writing at Soapstone let me feel the real connection between writing and the world."
